Catholic Daughters hold memorial mass and 60th anniversary celebration
The Catholic Daughters of the Americas, Sacred Heart of Jesus Court #1674, annually holds a memorial mass for the court members who died during the current year. This year, the court lost only one member, Mrs. Anna Lee Manuel. The mass also commemorated the 60th anniversary of the court’s founding in 1954. The court’s chaplain, Father Brian Harrington, celebrated the mass. Member Annette S. Fontenot served as mistress of ceremonies, and Beverly McBride was the organist providing music for the mass. The flag team and the Catholic Daughter’s banner were presented by Annetta Fontenot, Edna Soileau and Rose May. Court officers Barbara Delafosse, regent; Belinda Fontenot, vice regent; Peggy Soileau, recording secretary; Sybil Veillon, financial secretary; and Miranda Roberie, treasurer, completed the processional. The gifts were presented by members Bernita Chapman and Lynn Landreneau.
A meeting followed the mass. Members signed up to serve for the bingo game at Heritage Manor on November 13. The December meeting and Christmas social was set for Thursday, December 4, with the location to be announced later. Plans were made as to what foods to bring for the social.
Leah Hollier, committee chairman for the Christmas toy drive and food basket donations, addressed the court. She noted that boxes will be placed in the church the Sunday after Thanksgiving to collect toys and canned goods. The committee will meet on December 23, at the Family Life Center to package and distribute the gifts. Carrie Deville is co-chairman of the committee with Hollier.
Delafosse thanked Shirley Reed, Mary Jenkins and Bernita Chapman for assisting with the court audit.
Several members attended a planning meeting in Breaux Bridge on November 8, to plan the state convention, which will be held in April 2015.
Following the meeting, a birthday cake was served to celebrate the court’s 60th anniversary.
