Sacred Heart dismantles St. Joe’s Eagles Friday

The Sacred Heart Trojans were looking to get back in the win column when they faced off against St. Joe’s Eagles on Friday in a non-district contest. The Trojans started off slow, but began to open the game up in the second quarter, defeating the Eagles by a score of 59-25. The dismantling of St. Joe’s pushes the Sacred Heart record to 3-9 on the season.
Sacred Heart did not score their first basket until 5:21 left in the first quarter when Christopher Tate hit a two-point shot. The Trojans trailed 3-2 at that point in the period. The Trojans still trailed 4-2 with 3:06 left in the period until Sean Fontenot hit a basket to tie the game at four apiece. Three-point buckets by Tate and Nathan Fontenot plus a two-point shot by Sean Fontenot pushed the Trojans to a 12-4 lead as the period ended. This lead would not be lost by Sacred Heart for the rest of the game.
In the second quarter, the Trojans went on a 26-0 run. The Eagles were only able to score with 14 seconds left in the period with a two-point basket and a free throw on a Sacred Heart foul. Six Trojans scored in the quarter, with Conner Fontenot netting five points, including a three-point basket. As the horn sounded on the first half, Sacred Heart owned a commanding 28-7 lead.
The third period opened with the Eagles hitting one of three free throws. The Trojans answered right back with Mikey Laughlin scoring the next six points for Sacred Heart to lead 34-8 with 5:53 left in the period. A three-point play by St. Joe’s put them in double digits for the first time in the game with 5:27 showing on the clock. However, the Trojans scored the next 17 points to open the lead up to 51-11 with 1:19 left to play in the quarter. A free throw by the Eagles and a three-point basket by the Trojan’s Garrett Ortego closed out the period and the lead was in the Trojan’s favor, 54-12.
With the game under control, Sacred Heart was able to get a number of younger players some action in the fourth quarter. The Eagles did most of their scoring in the period. A five-point run by St. Joe’s cut the lead to 54-17. Running time in the final stanza did not allow the two squads to score much. The Eagles finished the contest scoring eight more points, while the Trojans were only able to manage five points as the final buzzer sounded.
Mikey Laughlin led all Sacred Heart scorers with 12 points. Christopher Tate and Jacques Fontenot each added eight points in the game. Seth Shipp and Jacques Fontenot were the leading rebounders with four apiece. The Trojans collected 15 steals and shot 35 percent from the field in the game.
