Sister Judith Dayle Coreil
March 21, 1936 - January 4, 2015
OPELOUSAS - Funeral services will be held for Sister Judith Dayle Coreil, 78, of Opelousas, at St. Landry Catholic Church at 10 a.m., Friday, January 9. Burial will follow in the St. Landry Cemetery.
A native of Ville Platte, Sister Coreil died Sunday, January 4, 2015, at Our Lady of Prompt Succor Nursing Home in Opelousas.
Sr. Judith entered the Congregation of the Marianites of Holy Cross on September 8, 1953, and pronounced her perpetual vows on August 14, 1958. She was educated at Xavier University in New Orleans. Her first years of ministry were spent in primary education as teacher and principal, and she was the founding principal of Christ the King School in Terrytown. She served as Assistant Superintendent of Catholic Schools in the Archdiocese of New Orleans and then as Superintendent of Catholic Schools in the Diocese of Houma-Thibodaux. From 1982-1989, she was the Director of Curriculum Development for the National Catholic Education Association in Washington, DC. In 1989, she was elected as Congregational Assistant for the Marianites of Holy Cross and served in leadership for 12 years. Following her time in community leadership, she served for over five years as Director of Public Relations at Our Lady of Prompt Succor Nursing Home and was then asked to be the Director of the Office for Religious for the Diocese of Lafayette. Failing health necessitated that she resign from this position in June 2013 and move to Our Lady of Prompt Succor Nursing Home.
Throughout her life, Sr. Judith’s heart overflowed with an abundance of love - her love for her family, the religious family of Holy Cross, the spiritual family which grew and developed around her through her many and varied interests in education and religious life. If you were in her presence for more than a few minutes, you were no longer a stranger because your life had now become intertwined with her life. While separated geographically, she remained connected to people in each area where she had served and had brought her very best and most generous self. Without doubt, those of us who were extremely blessed to have been connected with her in life, remain forever tied to the strings of her eternal heart.
Survivors include one brother, Gordon Coreil and his wife, Denise; and one sister-in-law, Betsy Coreil. She is also survived by nephew Gordon Coreil and his children, Julia, Cory and Ryan; niece Caroline Coreil Roy and Bryan Roy and their children, Michael and Victoria; nephew Charles “Chuck” and Teresa Coreil and their children, Aaron, Luke and Kate; nephew Kemp and Ginger Coreil and their children, Thomas, Camille and Catherine; and niece, Kara Coreil Ward and Wallace Ward.

To celebrate her life, a wake will be held today, January 8, from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Our Lady of Prompt Succor Nursing Home Chapel, with a prayer service at 6 p.m. On Friday, January 9, the wake will continue from 8 a.m. to 10 a.m. at St. Landry Catholic Church in Opelousas. A Mass of the Resurrection will be held at 10 a.m., with burial in the St. Landry Cemetery in Opelousas.
