Lady Trojan comeback falls short Tuesday night

A valiant comeback effort fell just short for the Lady Trojans, as they faced off against the Lady Bears of Church Point Tuesday night. Down by 10 points at the start of the final quarter, Sacred Heart tied the game at 47-47, only to come up short in a 54-51 loss. A major factor in the loss for the Lady Trojans was the number of turnovers. Sacred Heart lost the ball 31 times on the night. With the defeat, the Lady Trojans fall to 7-9 on the year. The next contest for Sacred Heart will be next Tuesday, as they travel to False River for their first district game.
Both teams started slow from the tip-off. The Lady Bears scored the first six points of the game before the Lady Trojans could muster any points. Sacred Heart’s Hannah Lemoine knocked down three points to cut the lead to 6-3 with 5:12 left in the period. An exchange of buckets gave Church Point an 11-7 advantage as time ran out in the initial stanza.
The Lady Bears netted the first three points of the second quarter. However, the Lady Trojans continued to grind it out as the quarter progressed. With four seconds left on the clock, Gabbie Andrepont knocked down a two point basket to cut the Church Point lead to 26-20. Andrepont scored five points in the period to keep the Lady Trojans within striking distance as the first half came to an end.
Church Point struck first in the third period, collecting four points to extend their lead to 30-20. However, baskets by Catherine Poche and Kara Aguillard brought the Lady Bear advantage back to six points. Sacred Heart cut the lead to four with 4:27 left on buckets by Poche and Natalie Earles. Church Point answered going on a 10-4 run to close out the quarter and held a 42-32 lead going into the final stanza.
Sacred Heart came out in the final period in a full court press against the Lady Bears. The strategy was a good one, as Church Point began to wear down and turn the ball over. A nine point run by the Lady Trojans late in the period cut the Lady Bear lead to one, 46-45. After tying the game at 47 with 2:18 left, Church Point opened up a six point lead 34 seconds later. Sacred Heart cut the lead to two points with only 40 seconds left on the clock. However, the Lady Bears were able to hold on to the lead and take the win.
Leading scorer for the Lady Trojans was Gabbie Andrepont who netted 13 points. Catherine Poche added 12 points for Sacred Heart. Andrepont also grabbed 10 boards to lead all rebounders. Erin Fontenot grabbed five steals.
