Demons, Bulldogs get “offensive” in shoot out
Going into their non-district game against class 3A Jennings High School, the Mamou Green Demons had only reached the 70 point mark once all season long. The Demons looked to improve on the offensive side against the Bulldogs to earn their sixth victory of the year. Mamou did manage to shatter that mark by pouring in 84 points. However, Jennings showed their own offensive prowess, scoring a 106-84 victory over the Demons.
The offensive fireworks for both squads began in the very first period. Mamou netted 20 points in the initial stanza. Unfazed by the Demon barrage, the Bulldogs popped the nets for 25 points of their own. Trey Wilson did all he could for Mamou, scoring six points in the quarter.
Mamou and Jennings continued to attack the basket in the second quarter. The Demons added an impressive 26 points to the scoreboard in the period. The Bulldogs, not to be outdone, scored 23 points of their own. As the first half ended, Jennings held a slim two point lead 48-46.
Halftime did nothing to cool down the combatants as the third period played out. The Bulldogs continued to rattle the iron, knocking in 26 points in the quarter. The Demons tried to keep pace, but could only manage to tack on 18 points to their score. At the end of three periods, Jennings led 74-64.
The Demons could not have predicted what would occur in the fourth stanza, as Jennings kept up the scoring assault by draining 32 points in the quarter. In any other contest, the 20 points scored by Mamou in the period would have been enough to out duel the opponent. However, this was not just any contest and the Demons fell on the short side of the tremendous offensive shoot out.
When a team scores 84 points, there are naturally going to be multiple double digit efforts by the players. Mamou had four competitors reach that mark. Leading all Demon scorers was Nathaniel Holland who dropped a cool 28 points.
Not far behind Holland was Russell Edwards, who netted 24 points of his own. Lil Paul Williams added 15 points and Wilson chipped in 10 points.
The Demons drop to 6-12 on the season with the loss. Mamou will host DeQuincy next Friday in their first district
