Sacred Heart falls in first district game Friday
Going into their first district game on Friday, the Sacred Heart Lady Trojans knew that it would be a tall task to gain a victory. After all they were playing the defending class 1A state runners-up and the current number one team in the state power point rankings. The North Central Lady Hurricanes proved they are still the cream of the crop in district 5-1A as they ran away with an 85-34 win.
It was evident from the first quarter that the Lady Trojans would have an uphill battle to overcome the talented Lady Hurricanes. North Central started very strong taking a 30-8 lead as the first period ended. One bright spot for Sacred Heart in the quarter was Sydney Shiver. The Lady Trojan knocked down four of the eight Sacred Heart points scored.
The Lady Hurricanes continued to dominate in the second period. North Central added to their lead by pouring in 21 points in the quarter. The Lady Trojans were only to manage 11 points in the stanza. As the first half buzzer sounded North Central held a 51-13 lead.
As the second half began, the Lady Trojans continued to work hard. A 10 point effort by Sacred Heart, lead by Natalie Earles’ four points, showed that “do or die” attitude. However, the Lady Hurricanes were able to stretch their lead to 67-23 by adding 16 points in the quarter.
The final period followed the script of the first three quarters. Even though Sacred Heart popped the nets for 11 points, North Central was able to tack on 21 more points and finish out the game.
In the game Shiver led all scorers for Sacred Heart with 10 points. Natalie Earles added another seven points in the loss.
With the loss, the Lady Trojans drop to 7-10 on the season and 0-1 in district play. Sacred Heart will travel to False River on Tuesday to face the Lady Gators in a district contest.
