Mamou Demons picks up key district win over Kinder

Mamou Green Demons hosted the Kinder Yellow Jackets in a key district match-up Friday night.
The Green Demon fans packed the gym with Mardi Gras spirit. With a complete team effort, Mamou scored a 65-49 win.
The Mamou boys came out sluggish at the beginning of the game, allowing the Yellow Jackets to take a quick 4-0 lead. The Demons answered with Toby Ortego nailing two three-pointers. Mamou went on a 14-0 run over a five-minute span, giving them a 16-8 lead as the first quarter ended.
The second period started with Mamou’s Russell Edwards securing four straight points. Kinder answered with a run of their own, making it 20-12 with six minutes until halftime. Ortego stayed hot from the outside, bringing the lead to 23-12.
Trey Wilson made a long jump shot from the corner for the Demons. Both teams would then trade baskets. Demon Cameron Tinley scored four points, bringing Mamou’s lead to 29-16 with two minutes left in the half. Both teams traded buckets the last two minutes, bringing the score to 36-22 at halftime in favor of the Green Demons.
Kinder started the third period scoring four straight points. The Green Demons adjusted and scored nine straight points, extending their lead to 48-29.
Both teams would go back and forth the rest of the third period. Tinley led Mamou with six points in the quarter. Going into the fourth period, the Green Demons led 52-33.
The final frame would be an exciting one as the fans got into the game after Mamou’s Russell Edwards would slam dunk. The Yellow Jackets did not go away easily. Kinder’s Noah Nelson hit four three point attempts, bringing the score to 59-49 with 2:38 remaining in the game. Mamou’s fans and student section started calling for Head Coach John Jack to put Tinley back in the game. Coach Jack would give the fans what they asked for.
With both teams playing great defense at the end of the game, Tinley found a way to get open at the top of the key, nailing his third tri-factor of the game. This would also be the final bucket of the game for both teams as the buzzer would sound. The Green Demons would come out on top with a final score 65-39.
Mamou was led on offensive by Russell Edwards with 15 points and seven blocks. Mason Tinley ended his night with 10 points.
The Green Demons will travel to Dequincy for their next district game on Tuesday.
