On Friday night, the district 5-1A season continued in Ville Platte as the Sacred Heart Trojans and Lady Trojans hosted False River Academy. The Lady Trojans scored off of the opening tip and never relinquished the lead in a 48-30 win over the Lady Gators.
The Trojans fought off several Gator runs to take the 58-47 victory. Both squads stay in the hunt for a playoff spot with the sweep.
Girl’s Game
The Lady Trojans took the opening tip and went to work on collecting their fourth district win. Gabby Andrepont knocked in the first four points of the game, giving Sacred Heart a lead they would not lose. The Lady Trojans opened the advantage up to eight points at 11-3, when Erin Fontenot sunk a two-point bucket with only 1:32 left in the period. The two teams traded baskets as the quarter came to a close. When the horn sounded, Sacred Heart led 12-6.
As the second quarter began, both the Lady Trojans and Lady Gators were close to the bonus threshold, as each squad had committed several team fouls. That threshold was crossed and seven of the next 11 possessions were held at the free throw line.
Sacred Heart gained a slight edge in the period, outscoring False River 8-6, and increasing their lead to 20-12 as the stanza closed.
The second half began very quietly, with only five total points scored in the first four minutes of the third quarter. The Lady Trojans picked up the defensive pressure, causing several False River turnovers.
Those Lady Gator miscues turned into a 10-point Sacred Heart run in the last 2:54 of the period. As the third quarter came to an end, Sacred Heart held a 37-12 lead.
Going into the final stanza, the Lady Trojans understood they needed a strong showing in order to hold on to their 15 point advantage. The fourth quarter would mirror the second period, as both teams were once again in the bonus. Out of the 14 possessions in the stanza, 11 of those were spent on the free throw line.
Sacred Heart made the most of their attempts at the charity stripe, going 3 for 6. The Lady Trojans finished the game off with the win despite being outscored 18-11 in the last period.
Leading the way for Sacred Heart was Andrepont, who knocked down a game-high 18 points. Fontenot added 12 points for the Lady Trojans.
Sacred Heart is now even on the season at 11-11 and 4-2 in district play. The Lady Trojans will travel to New Roads to take on Catholic of Pointe Coupee on Tuesday in a district contest.
Boy’s Game
For the Sacred Heart Trojans to meet their pre-season goal of making the playoffs, there could not be any hiccups in their performance. The Trojans took this knowledge into the game against the False River Gators.
Sacred Heart opened the game against the Gators, taking an 8-2 lead after the first five minutes of the first period. False River cut the lead to one at 8-7, but Sacred Heart closed out the period on a 6-2 run to lead 14-9.
The second quarter started out looking like the Trojans were going to put away the Gators early, as they scored 11 of the first 15 points. However, False River regained their composure to stay in the contest.
The Gators were able to finish the period with 11 points. Sacred Heart made sure that False River was not able to put a dent the edge that had built by scoring 17 points themselves. The Trojans held a 31-20 lead as the first half horn sounded.
Momentum changes dominated the third quarter. False River came out of the locker room needing a strong push to get back into the ball game. The Gators got that push in the first 1:30 of the period by going on a 9-2 run.
Sacred Heart counteracted the False River momentum swing by netting the last 12 points in the quarter and finished with a 45-29 lead as the stanza ended.
The final period was a back and forth affair, as each team traded baskets throughout the quarter. The closest the Gators could get to the Trojans was nine points at the 1:27 mark.
On the flip side, Sacred Heart at one point in the period held a 16-point lead. The Trojans held off the Gators and walked away with the 11-point win.
