Parish girl hoopsters eyeing playoffs
As the season winds down for the Evangeline Parish lady basketball teams, a playoff berth will be in the cards for most of those squads. According to the latest power rankings, the parish will be well represented in the 2015 LHSAA post-season. As of press time, each of the girl’s basketball teams had one game left to play in the regular season. Still, it is very possible that four of the five lady hoopsters will be in the playoffs.
The regular season does not officially end until Friday for the girls. All teams in the state must have their records reported by Friday. The playoff brackets will come out on Monday. This is when the teams will know who they play and where they play.
In class 3A the Ville Platte Lady Bulldogs are ranked as the number one team in the state in terms of power points. If that holds up, the Lady Bulldogs would host a first round playoff game. Ville Platte went into the playoffs last year as the number one seed which helped propel them to a state runner-up trophy.
Class 2A has the Mamou Lady Green Demons as the number 11 team in the state power rankings. The Lady Demons closed out the 2014 season as the ninth ranked team in the state. Mamou was able to defeat district rival Kinder in the first round of the playoffs last year, before bowing out in the regional round to Redemptorist High School. If the power ranking stays the same, the Lady Demons would host a first round game.
The Sacred Heart Lady Trojans and the Basile Lady Bearcats remain in contention for a playoff berth in class 1A. Sacred Heart holds the number 19 position in the power rankings and the Lady Bearcats are currently number 24. Both Basile and the Lady Trojans would have to travel if each team remains below number 16. Sacred Heart lost to Tensas High School in last year’s first round playoffs, while the Lady Bearcats fell to Country Day in the opening round.
The Gazette will have the playoff scenarios as soon as they become available. Until that time it is a wait and see game for these lady hoopsters as to when and where they will be headed in the post-season.
