Lady Trojans end season with win over St. Ed’s
The Sacred Heart Lady Trojans ended the regular season hosting the St.Ed’s Lady Blue Jays. A win would bolster and hopefully increase the Sacred Heart power rating before the announcement of the playoff brackets. Senior night saw the Lady Trojans hold off the Lady Blue Jays in the last minutes for a 45-41 win.
Sacred Heart got off to a very slow start to begin the game. The Lady Trojans were not able to produce much offensively in the first quarter and found themselves behind as the first period ended. St. Ed’s took advantage of the poor Sacred Heart offensive performance and led 8-5 as the buzzer sounded.
Needing some momentum before halftime, the Lady Trojans came out in the second quarter on a mission to reverse the first period. A three-pointer by Sydney Shiver and two buckets by Erin Fontenot help to propel the Sacred Heart offense. That coupled with a great defensive period allowed the Lady Trojans to outscore the Lady Blue Jays 15-5 and take the 20-13 lead into the locker room.
Both squads took to the court in the third quarter hoping to break the game open. Sacred Heart got some much needed offense from Gabby Andrepont and Kara Aguillard, as the duo scored 11 of the Lady Trojan 19 points in the period. St. Ed’s did keep themselves in the ball game by scoring 10 points. As the quarter ended the Lady Trojans held a 37-23 lead.
In the final stanza, Sacred Heart pushed the lead to 13 until the 3:30 mark and looked like they were going to put the game away for good. However, St.Ed’s would not go away quietly, as the Lady Jays cut the lead down to four with only one minute left in the quarter. The Lady Trojans were able to hold on and take the victory as the final buzzer went off.
Sacred Heart was led by Kara Aguillard, who netted 13 points. The Lady Trojans end the regular season with a 13-11 record and a 6-2 district record. Sacred Heart was the district 5-1A runners-up and now await the playoff bracket to see where and when they will play next Thursday.
