Beryl Joy Israel Cunningham

SAN ANTONIO, Texas - Funeral services were held for Beryl Joy Israel Cunningham, 87, of San Antonio, Texas, at St. David’s Episcopal Church in San Antonio at 10 a.m., Friday, February 20. Inurnment followed at the Sunset Memorial Park.
Ms. Cunningham died peacefully on Saturday, February 7, 2015, in San Antonio, Texas. She was born in Covington and her family farmed in the countryside near Ville Platte. She attended Vidrine High School, where she was a majorette, and graduated in 1943 as the class salutatorian.
Survivors include three children, Thomas Cunningham, and his wife, Patricia, Kathleen Cunningham Rienstra, and her husband, James, and Mary Ellen Cunningham-Kruppa, and her husband, Joseph; four grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. She is also survived by three siblings, Thomas Wilman Israel and his wife, Ann, Sherry Ann Israel Comeaux and her husband, John, and James Arthur Israel and his wife, Diane; and her dear friend, Verna Dean Demoruelle.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Jean Pierre Israel and Laurence Vidrine Israel; her husband, Thomas Roger Cunningham; her infant daughter, Mary Susan Cunningham; and one brother, John Lowell Israel.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that contributions be made to the Daughters of the King of St. David’s Episcopal Church or the Sunshine School for the Deaf.
The family wishes to thank Gentiva Hospice and the nurses and caregivers at Brookdale Alamo Heights who attended to Beryl’s every need with exceptional care and genuine compassion in the last four weeks of her life. Finally, we thank Beryl’s doctors, Robert J. Freeman, Zulfaqqar M. Jaffar and Ryan N. Bourne.
