Lady Trojans take doubleheader from Pitkin
The Sacred Heart Lady Trojan softball team took on the Pitkin Lady Tigers in a Tuesday doubleheader. The Lady Trojans used a combination of timely hitting and great pitching to earn wins of 9-5 and 3-2. With the two wins, Sacred Heart moves to 5-2 on the season.
In the first game of the doubleheader, the Lady Trojan bats were on fire, as they collected 14 hits in the win over the Lady Tigers. Sacred Heart jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the first when Elizabeth Soileau and Caroline Fontenot both doubled to start the game, followed by a Gabbie Andrepont single.
Pitkin responded in the bottom of the first with two runs to tie the game.
The Lady Trojans continued the hitting barrage in the top of the second. With two outs in the inning, Sacred Heart scored three runs on three straight hits. The big strike came when Andrepont tripled, bringing in Fontenot to round out the scoring.
Pitkin came back, touching the plate twice in the bottom of the inning to close the Lady Trojan advantage to 5-4.
Sacred Heart added three more in the top half of the fourth inning to extend their lead. Hannah Lemoine helped the Lady Trojan cause by doubling to left field to bring in Kara Aguillard. The Lady Tigers added a run in the bottom of the inning, bringing the Sacred Heart lead to 8-5.
The Lady Trojans added another run in the sixth, when Andrepont homered, to close out the scoring for Sacred Heart. Soileau took care of business on the mound, shutting down Pitkin in the final three Lady Tiger at bats.
Leading the way at the plate for the Lady Trojans was Soileau, who went four for five, with two doubles. Andrepont was three for five, with a triple and a home run. She also collected four runs batted in.
Soileau also pitched a complete game, giving up four earned runs on nine hits while striking out one.
If the first game was an offensive showcase, game two was a pitcher’s duel. The Lady Trojans needed two runs in the bottom of the sixth to overtake Pitkin for the victory.
The Lady Tigers took control of the game early, scoring two runs in the top of the third inning. Sacred Heart would cut the lead to 2-1 in the bottom of the fourth when Kara Aguillard singled in Gabbie Andrepont from third base.
The score remained that way until the sixth inning. Elizabeth Fontenot singled to lead off the bottom half of the inning. After a Caroline Fontenot pop out to first base, Andrepont walked to put runners on first and second with one out. Aguillard then hit a hard ground ball to the third baseman, resulting in Fontenot being forced out at the bag.
With runners at first and second and two outs, Courtney Vidrine smashed a double to center field, scoring Andrepont. Aguillard advanced to third on the Vidrine double and scored the last run of the inning on an error by the third baseman.
Pitkin could not respond in the top half of the seventh inning, thus ending the game.
At the plate, Sacred Heart was led by Vidrine and Aguillard. Both players were two for three with a run batted in.
On the mound, Baylee Veillon went the distance, throwing seven complete innings. Veillon gave up two earned runs on eight hits.
