Lady Trojans earn hard fought district win
The newest concept in high school softball and baseball is the playing of the same team twice in a week for district competition. With that said, the Sacred Heart Lady Trojans tangled with district foe St. Ed’s on Monday and again on Wednesday.
In Wednesday’s game, Sacred Heart used stellar pitching performances from Elizabeth Soileau and Baylee Veillon combined with just enough offense to take the 3-1 win over the Lady Blue Jays. The Lady Trojans improve to 12-7 on the year and 2-2 in district play with the victory.
The first three innings in the contest belonged to the pitchers. Sacred Heart’s Soileau and St. Ed’s Kasey Lafleur took command of the game early on. Neither squad could mount much offense. The closest any team came to scoring was when Sacred Heart’s Erin Fontenot was thrown out at the plate in the bottom of the third inning.
After getting out of a bases-loaded jam in the top of the fourth, the Lady Trojans were able to put points up on the board in the bottom of the inning. A walk issued to Kara Aguillard and a single by Caroline Fontenot started the Sacred Heart rally. Aguillard was then put out at third base when Hannah Lemoine grounded to third base.
Another fielder’s choice by Laura Beth Fontenot resulted in Fontenot being put out at third base as well. Sydney Fontenot roped a single to right field to load the bases.
With two outs and the count full, Erin Fontenot crushed a triple to left centerfield, clearing the bases. Soileau grounded out to second base to end the inning. However, the damage was done; Sacred Heart had now opened a 3-0 lead over St. Ed’s.
The Lady Blue Jays came into the top of the fifth needing runs to keep pace with the Lady Trojans. St. Ed’s scored on two singles, a stolen base and a passed ball to cut the Sacred Heart lead to 3-1. It was not enough, as Soileau and Veillon retired the side in the sixth and seventh inning to end the game.
Soileau and Veillon were on their game, combining to allow only one run on seven hits, while issuing zero walks. Soileau also struck out five in the contest. At the plate, Erin Fontenot led all Lady Trojan hitters going two for three with a triple and three runs batted in.
