Lady Trojans notch third district win in a row
On Tuesday, the Sacred Heart Lady Trojans hosted the False River Lady Gators in a district 5-1A matchup. Coming into the game the Lady Trojans were two games out of first place and needed a win to keep pace with league leader Catholic of Pointe Coupee. Sacred Heart scored three runs in the bottom of the fifth to pull away from the Lady Gators in a 5-1 win. The Lady Trojans improve to 13-7 on the year and an ever important 3-2 in district.
After blanking False River in the top of the first, Sacred Heart took the lead in the bottom of the inning by plating a single run. With one out, Gabbie Andrepont was hit by a pitch. Kara Aguillard singled to put runners at first and second. Caroline Fontenot drove a 1-1 pitch to left field for a single to score Andrepont. Hannah Lemoine struck out to end the inning.
Sacred Heart struck again in the bottom of the second, adding a run to go up 2-0. Leadoff hitter Sydney Fontenot reached base on an error. Laura Beth Fontenot singled to put runners at first and second. A perfect sacrifice bunt by Sarah Soileau put runners at second and third with one out. An RBI single by Elizabeth Soileau plated Sydney Fontenot and moved Laura Beth Fontenot to third base. Mallory Fontenot, courtesy running for Soileau was thrown out stealing. Courtney Vidrine ended the inning with a pop up to the short stop.
False River was able to inch back into the game in the top of the fifth inning, scoring a run to cut the lead to 2-1. However, the Lady Trojans notched three runs in the bottom of the inning to extend their lead to 5-1. The big hit of the inning was a one out double by Caroline Fontenot, plating Vidrine and Andrepont. Fontenot came across to score on a single by Hannah Lemoine. A line out to the shortstop by Sydney Fontenot and a fly ball to centerfield by Laura Beth Fontenot brought about the last two outs of the inning.
The Lady Gators managed only one base runner in the last two innings, as Elizabeth Soileau mowed down the remaining False River hitters to seal the win. Soileau threw a complete game, allowing one run on seven hits, while striking out two. Soileau threw 80 pitches and gave up zero walks.
Leading the way at the plate was Elizabeth Soileau, who was three for four with a triple and a run batted in. Kara Aguillard, Caroline Fontenot and Gabbie Andrepont were all two for three in the game. Andrepont scored two runs, while Fontenot had two runs batted in.
