Trojans blowout Gators for first district win
In their first district game of the season, the Sacred Heart Trojans hosted the False River Gators. The Trojans came into the game riding a fourteen game win streak. Sacred Heart looked to not only extend their win streak, but more importantly to get a jump in the district standings. The Trojans took care of both situations by running away with a 14-2 run rule victory.
False River took a quick 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning. Sacred Heart did not let the Gators enjoy that lead for very long, as the Trojans opened the offensive flood gates by six runs in the bottom half of the inning. Most of the damage done by Sacred Heart came via the base on balls. The Trojans collected five hits along with doubles by Brandon Hudspeth and Ben Bergeron to go ahead 6-1.
Sacred Heart extended their lead in the bottom of the second. After blanking False River in the top half of the inning, the Trojans plated another two runs in the bottom half of the inning. With one out, Jacob L. Lafleur reached first base on a hit by pitch. Garrick Fontenot crushed the very next pitch for a double, putting runners at second and third.
Caleb Soileau singled to left field, scoring Lafleur and Fontenot. Nick LaHaye flied out to leftfield, followed by walk issued to Phillip Vidrine. Bergeron grounded out to second base for the final out.
With the score 8-1 going into the top of the third inning, Sacred Heart again held the Gators scoreless.
The Trojans came to the plate in the bottom of the second seeking to extend their lead. Sacred Heart used two base hits, including a double by Soileau, a hit by pitch and a False River error to add four more runs. After three complete innings, Sacred Heart now had a 12-1 lead.
The Gators managed to plate a run in the top of the fourth inning to cut the Trojan advantage to 12-2. However, the Sacred Heart offense was not finished putting runs across the plate. Phillip Vidrine lead off the bottom of the fourth drawing a walk. Josh LaHaye was hit by a pitch .Jacob A. Lafleur walked to put the bases loaded. A fielders choice by Keaton Tate scored Vidrine from third. Brandon Hudspeth was hit by a pitch putting bases loaded once again.
Jacob L. Lafleur recored the second out on a strike out. Jacob Dupre walked to score Lafleur. Dylan Scully grounds to third base for the final out. False River was shut down in top of the fifth to close out the game.
Three Trojans took to the hill in the game. Vidrine picked up the win, throwing three complete innings, surrendering one run on five hits, while striking out three. Jacob L. Lafleur came in to pitch one inning, allowing one run on zero hits. Josh LaHaye came to the mound in the fifth inning and faced the minimum number of batters. LaHaye did not allow a run or a hit in his appearance.
Leading all Sacred Heart hitters was Caleb Soileau. Soileau was two for two with two runs scored and three runs batted in. Jacob L. Lafleur went one for two scoring two runs and knocking in two runs. The Trojans improve to 18-2 on the year and 1-0 in district with the win.
