JSM first and second grade students honored for success in reading
Reading is one of the essentials of early childhood education, and among those having success locally by offering recognition was James Stephens Montessori first and second grade teacher Therese Phillips.
She said her students “far exceeded expectations in reading this year.” The recognition came near the end of the school year in the form of medals given to students who had the most words read in one minute, and the most improved in one minute of reading during the school year.
Phillips said the first-grade student with the most words read was William Huval and the first-grade student that was the most improved was Ravione Gallow. The second-grade student with the most words read was Jarian Leday and the most improved reader was Necorian Thomas.
It was the most successful reading achievement in her three years at James Stephens, Phillips said. She said she tried out new techniques, such as having the first-grade students compete with her second-grade students, and using new technology, such as computer software to produce easy-to-read graphs that showed the students the progress they were making.
