Heritage Manor News: Total knee replacements
Total knee replacement surgery was first performed in 1968. Over time, improvements have been made in both surgical materials and techniques. Today, they are considered safe and effective. Each year in the United States, more than 600,000 knee replacements are performed. It is a surgical procedure to replace weight-bearing surfaces of the knee joint to relieve pain and disabilities. The most common causes are osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis and post traumatic arthritis. Osteoarthritis is age-related wear and tear. It usually occurs in individuals of 50 years or older. Rheumatoid arthritis is chronic inflammation that damages the cartilage and causes pain and stiffness. Post traumatic arthritis is usually caused by a severe knee injury. More than 90 percent of individuals who have total knee replacements experience significant reduction in pain and an improvement in the ability to perform normal activities of daily living. Infections may occur and are usually treated with antibiotics.
