epsb votes to keep reimbursing coaches for transporting their athlets back home

During Evangeline Parish’s School Board Meeting Tuesday, a decision was finally reached concerning whether or not the parish would continue providing reimbursement checks to coaches for transporting athletes home.
With the school board meeting room was filled with people in support of continuing reimbursements to coaches, Board Member Arthur Savoy  made a motion to stop reimbursing coaches for transporting their athletes home.
With a six to five vote, Savoy’s motion was shot down, meaning reimbursements for coaches will continue.
The five board members voting to approve  Savoy’s motion were: Board President Wayne Dardeau, Board Vice President Scott Limoges, Dr. Bobby Deshotel, Darren Vidrine, and Savoy. Board members opposing the motion were: Peggy Forman, Nancy Hamlin, Lonnie Soileau, Mike Fontenot, Georgianna Wilson, and Wanda Skinner.
Savoy does not feel that the parish has the appropriate amount of funds to provide the transportation for all students who may need it. If it is going to be offered to some than Savoy said “it needs to be offered to all.”
Coaches attended the meeting prepared to address the board concerning this matter. Pine Prairie High’s boys basketball coach Chris Guillory said, “FFA (Future Farmers of America) only stay after school on field trip days which is maybe twice a year.” Guillory continued, “This impacts us [athletes and coaches] more.”                                                                                                                        During the meeting, Superintendent Toni Hamlin delivered an update on the number of certified teachers we currently have employed in the parish. Hamlin reported, “We have 399 teachers employed in the parish and out of that 399 we have 360 certified teachers, 22 that are in the process of earning certification, and 15 who are not certified and have not entered into a certification program.”
