The official beginning to the high school football season is still two weeks away.
However, teams across the state are gearing up for their first real look at the team and the progress made throughout the summer.
This is no different for the group of Evangeline Parish football squads, as they take to the field today and tomorrow for their annual fall scrimmages.
Basile High School will kick off the slate of scrimmages today, as they travel to take on the DeQuincy Tigers. Scrimmage time is set for 5:30 p.m.
“So far, the fall camp has gone really well,” said Basile head coach Kevin Bertrand. “I am really pleased with how quickly we are picking up the offense and defensive schemes. Against DeQuincy, I hope to see a little more consistency in the way we do things on both sides of the ball.”
Mamou High school will travel to Bunkie on Friday in a three-way scrimmage with Bunkie and Christian Life. Scrimmage time is set for 6 p.m.
“Things have been good so far this past week since we put on the pads,” stated head coach Brian Brumfield. “Things are progressing slowly, but I feel we are getting better everyday. Going into Friday, I hope to see us run the ball more consistently and see who will be our signal caller this year.”
Pine Prairie will be the only team to host a scrimmage this year. The Panthers will entertain Tioga tomorrow. Scrimmage time is set for 6 p.m.
“Right now our defense is ahead of our offense,” commented head coach Yves Prince. “Against Tioga, we will see how much we can move the ball on offense, especially in our new scheme.”
New head coach Josh Harper and his Sacred Heart Trojans will travel to St. Mary’s on Friday. Scrimmage time is set for 6 p.m.
“Things are going extremely well,” said Harper. “We are hoping to get a lot of players some time in the scrimmage against St. Mary’s, especially the younger players.”
The same goes for head coach Jorie Randle and the Ville Platte High Bulldogs, as they travel to Lake Arthur tomorrow. Scrimmage time is set for 6 p.m.
“We have a number of younger players that I think can help us this year, including freshmen,” stated Randle. “I want to take a look at those guys and see how they react to game time situations. We plan on staying as basic as possible on offense and defense.”
