Mamou High: Defense will be inexperienced for Green Demons

With only two starters returning from last season, the Mamou Green Demon defense is definitely on a learning curve this season.
The good news for the Demons is that the two returning players are two of the best on the team. Joab Perron – who will also handle running back duties – will make the transition from outside linebacker to the middle; and Adam Chapman will anchor the defensive line again.
“The defense can be describe in one word,” Demon head coach Brian Brumfield said, “inexperience.
What his players lack in game time, he’s hoping to make up for with enthusiasm.
“It’s going to be a learning process,” he said. “Right now, I’m looking for kids who want to play: kids who love to hit and love to run to the ball.”
Once Brumfield has identified those players, he’s counting on their development over the course of the season.
“We’re teaching them proper technique right now,” said Brumfield, who also serves as the team’s defensive coordinator, “but that’s going to take a little longer.”
In the meantime, Brumfield is looking to instill a “bend-but-don’t-break” philosophy.
Although the schedule is filled with playoff teams from last season, they have one thing in common that might make Brumfield’s vision a success: They all are mainly run-oriented offenses.
“Our opponents will like to run a lot,” Brumfield explained. “What we’re hoping to do is to get some stops on each series that force them into passing situations, to put them out of their comfort zone.”
