MAMOU -- In a non-district game, the Oberlin Tigers scored three touchdowns in the third quarter to burst past the Mamou Demons in a 36-12 win. Mamou drops to 0-3 on the year, while Oberlin moves to 1-2 on the season.
The Tigers did not take long to get on the board first. Taking over on their 43-yard line after a Mamou punt, Oberlin’s Kaylup Wilson took the handoff on the very first play from scrimmage and jetted 57 yards for the touchdown.
The two-point conversion was denied, however the Tigers led 6-0 with 9:32 left in the first quarter.
Mamou did not let the big play from Oberlin bother them for very long. The Demons went on offense and began attacking the Tigers on the ground.
Mamou began the next offensive series on their 38-yard line and eleven plays later found the end zone on a five yard run by Trey Wilson.
The two-point try was stopped, but with 4:22 left in the first quarter, the game was now tied 6-6.
The teams exchanged punts on the next two possessions. Oberlin took over at their 38-yard line mid way through the second quarter.
The Tigers then put together a long drive of their own, going 62 yard in ten plays. Donovan Berry capped off the drive for Oberlin with a nine yard touchdown run. James Kirklin ran the two-point conversion in, giving the Tigers a 14-6 lead with 7:10 left in the half.
Neither team could generate any offense for the remainder of the half.
The third quarter saw Oberlin add three more scores to extend their lead. The Tigers scored on the opening possession of the second half after a five play 66 yard drive.
Dequarius Brown plunged in from six yards out for the touchdown. The two-point conversion failed, but Oberlin now led 20-6 at the 9:42 mark.
A pooch kick-off was recovered by the Tigers, giving them the ball at the Mamou 47-yard line.
Two plays later, Kirklin dove in from one yard out and Ge’Ani Guillory added the two-point run to extend the Tiger lead to 28-6 with 9:21 remaining in the third quarter.
On the ensuing kickoff, Oberlin recovered another pooch kickoff at the Demon 45-yard line.
Five plays later, Wilson broke loose for a 28-touchdown run and Kelane Wilson added the two-point run to extend the Tiger lead to 36-6 at the 6:53 mark.
The Demons added their final touchdown late in the fourth quarter. Quarterback Levi Fontenot plunged in from one yard out for the late score. The two-point conversion was no good, leaving the score 36-12 in favor of Oberlin.
Leading rusher for the Demons was Shawn Malveau, who carried the ball nine times for 46 yards.
Fontenot was five for 14 for 42 yards and two interceptions through the air. Lil Paul Williams led all receivers with three catches for 32 yards.
Mamou will travel to Pine Prairie next Friday to take on the Panthers in a inter-parish game.
After the game, Demon head coach Brian Brumfield was pleased with his team’s first half effort.
“The first half, I thought we executed pretty well,” said Brumfield. “The players were executing their assignments and we moved the football effectively against their defense.”
“But, we started to get some injuries and that hampered our ability to move the ball in the second half.”
