Bulldogs hold off Tigers 13-7 with last second stand

OPELOUSAS -- In dramatic fashion, the Ville Platte High Bulldogs staved off a feisty Opelousas Tiger team on a fourth and goal from the Bulldog three-yard line to preserve a 13-7 win.
Ville Platte now moves to 3-2 on the year and will face Eunice High School in the first district game this coming Friday night in Ville Platte.
The Bulldogs dominated the contest for almost the entire game.
Ville Platte chewed up not only time but yardage in the first half, racking up 233 total yards in the first two quarters of play.
The Bulldogs got on the board first at the 5:26 mark of the first quarter when running back Daylon Jones scampered into the end zone from 10 yards out.
Rodricas Fontenot tacked on the extra point to give Ville Platte the early 7-0 lead.
The Bulldogs struck again in the second quarter on a 35-yard touchdown toss from Terez Alfred to Jaishaun Doucet on a third down and 24.
Fontenot’s attempt on the extra point was blocked giving Ville Platte the 13-0 lead going into the locker room.
The third quarter and the first half of the fourth quarter did not see much action from either team.
However, a dramatic shift in the momentum occurred at the 6:54 mark of the fourth quarter.
With Ville Platte back up on their three-yard line, Bulldog quarterback Terez Alfred lost the handle on the snap in the end zone. Opelousas defensive lineman Payton Duffy dove on the ball for the Tiger touchdown.
The extra point was good off of the foot of Bailey Leblanc and Opelousas had cut the lead to 13-7.
After forcing Ville Platte to punt, Opelousas got the ball back with 4:25 left in the game at their 27-yard line.
The Tigers went on a nine play drive that brought them to the three-yard line with :34 seconds left.
On fourth down, Ville Platte’s Jones blitz through the right side causing a loss on the play and giving the Bulldogs the ball back on downs, thus ending the game.
Jones led all Bulldog rushers with 178 yards on 31 carries.
Alfred was four for eight for 103 yards and a touchdown through the air.
Rondrekus Ben had two receptions for 45 yards to lead all Bulldog receivers.
