As the Basile Bearcats (7-1, 3-0) prepare for the Catholic of Pointe Coupee Hornets (5-3, 3-0), one important fact rests on the minds of all the Bearcat players and coaches; a win means a least a share of the District 5-1A title. Game time is set for 7 p.m.
“Our players know what we are playing for Friday night,” said Bearcat head coach Keving Bertrand. “They are fully aware of the importance of this game. For us this is just like a playoff game.”
Basile comes into the game against the Hornets on a tear. The Bearcats have destroyed their first three district opponents, outscoring those teams 124-13. Basile has shutout two of those three teams on their way to that perfect district record.
“Our pre-district prepared us for district play,” commented Bertrand. “Now, instead of us playing 3A schools, we are playing teams our own size.”
The domination for Basile stems from a rushing attack that, even though consistent all year, has exploded for 1,069 yards on 98 carries for an average of 10.9 yards per carry in the last three games.
Most of the damage on the ground has been carried out by senior running back Gabe Fontenot. Fontenot has 613 yards and nine touchdowns in that same three game stretch.
“Our offensive line has been doing a tremendous job the last three games,” stated Bertrand. “Our running backs are hitting the holes harder because they have confidence in those guys up front. We are coming together at the right time.”
Basile’s senior laden defense has really shined in district play. With the exception of the first half against Westminster, the Bearcats have stymied opposing offenses on their way to a perfect district record.
That defensive play will be need against the Hornets. Catholic comes into Friday’s game sporting a new run-oriented offense averaging 31 points per game. The Hornets have scored 40 or more points in their last two games.
“They hang their hat on the run,” said Bertrand. “They are running the wishbone this season and they run it well. We are going to have to play sound, assignment defense this week. Each individual has to do his job and cannot worry about any other assignment.”
