Basile needs win to claim outright district title

After clinching at least a tie for the District 5-1A title in this past Friday’s 10-0 win over Catholic of Pointe Coupee, the Basile Bearcats (8-1, 4-0) will travel to Eunice to take on the St. Edmund Blue Jays (4-5, 3-1) for the sole possession of the championship trophy.
A win against the Blue Jays would not only sew up the district title, but would more than likely keep the Bearcats as the number two seed in the Class 1A playoffs.
That would be huge, because it would more than likely prevent them from having to face the number one seed, the Kentwood Kangaroos; a team that has beaten Basile in the quarterfinals the last three years in a row.
“A very important game for us for many reasons,” said Basile head coach Kevin Bertrand. “This game will go a long way in determining the road in the playoffs. On top of that we can win the district title.”
The key to the success of the Bearcats this season has been a formula of a great running game and a solid defense that may give up yards, but keeps their opponents out of the end zone.
Offensively, Basile has rushed for 1,299 yards in the last four games, an average of 324.8 yards a game. In that same four game span, the Bearcat defense has yielded only 13 points to their opponents and has four shutout performances.
One would figure that the one team that stands between a perfect district record and a chance at a number two seed would be their biggest rival in team’s history.
“The Basile/St. Ed’s rivalry goes back a long way,” commented Bertrand. “I know they are going to be ready.”
