Sacred Heart splits with Pine Prairie in basketball action

The Pine Prairie basketball teams came to town Tuesday night to take on the Sacred Heart hard court squads in a non-district doubleheader.
In a game determined in the fourth quarter, the Lady Trojans defeated the Lady Panthers 46-36, while the Panthers broke open a one point game for an 82-77 victory.
Here is a recap of both games from Tuesday night.

Pine Prairie (G) vs. Sacred Heart
Both squads had trouble getting the engine running in the first quarter, as evident by the 4-3 Lady Panther lead at the 5:45 mark.
Pine Prairie managed to tack on seven more points before the buzzer sounded, and held Sacred Heart to only three points the rest of the quarter for an 11-6 lead.
Pine Prairie took advantage of some fast break opportunities to maintain their lead. As the quarter came to a close, the Lady Panthers had doubled their score from the first quarter and held an eight point lead, 22-14, going into the locker room.
Sacred Heart responded in the third quarter. The scoring of Gabbie Andrepont and a full court trapping defense held Pine Prairie to only three points in the quarter, as Sacred Heart closed out the period with a 33-26.
A stubborn Pine Prairie team would not go away easily. The Lady Panthers took a cue from Sacred Heart and rocketed out to an 8-0 run of their own to open the final quarter, regaining the lead at 35-34 with 3:48 left to go in the
However, Sacred Heart’s defensive pressure and a team scoring effort allowed the Lady Trojans to retake the lead at the 3:12 mark and hold on to that lead for the rest of the game.

Pine Prairie (B) vs. Sacred Heart
In the night cap game, the Pine Prairie Panthers and the Sacred Heart Trojans both came out on fire in the first quarter.
Pine Prairie’s Vontrevis Thomas collected eight points and Sacred Heart’s Keaton Tate knocked down 11 points in the opening quarter, as the teams exchanged blows with the Panthers holding a 19-18 edge at the end of the period.
However, the Panthers took control of the game from that point on. Pine Prairie went on a 16-6 run the rest of the period to take a 44-31 lead as the first half buzzer sounded.
Pine Prairie continued to extend their lead all the way through the third quarter. The Panthers outscored the Trojans 30-13 in the period to open up a 30 point advantage, 74-44, as the quarter came to a close.
No starters played in the period, which allowed the Trojans to mount a late charge. Sacred Heart wound up cutting the led to five in the final seconds of the game.
Leading the way for the Panthers was Thomas who poured in 23 points.
Sacred Heart was led by Tate, who torched the nets for 26 points.
