Fire Chief gives safety tips for fireworks and tree lighting

Ville Platte Fire Chief Chris Harrison is providing the community with several safety tips for this holiday season, including pointers when dealing with fireworks, Christmas trees and Christmas lights.
Tips for firework safety
•Adhere to all local laws and know what the fireworks you are using are capable of, including what is on the label.
•A responsible adult should always supervise children and make sure no alcohol is used when fireworks are present.
•Light only one a time then move away, and always wear safety glasses when handling fireworks.
•Use fireworks only outdoors and away from any buildings and vehicles.
•Always have a hose or bucket of water nearby and never try to relight a dud.
•Never carry them in your pockets, do not shoot or shoot them into metal or glass containers.
•Do not experiment with homemade fireworks and remember to wet them down and place them in a metal trash can when disposing them.
Tips for Christmas tree
and lighting safety
•Pick a tree with fresh green needles that do not fall off when touched.
•When placing the tree make sure it is at least three feet away from any heat source like a fireplace, floor heater, etc.
•Make sure the tree does not block any exits and be sure to add water daily.
•Use lights that have the label of a recognized testing laboratory.
•Replace any string of lights with worn or broken cords and loose bulb connections.
•Never use lit candles to decorate a tree and always turn off the lights before leaving home or going to bed.
Harrison says by practicing these safety tips can and will reduce your chances of having a holiday accident. Harrison also says to remember that the Ville Platte Fire Department and Evangeline Parish Fire District No. 2 are at your fingertips.
