With the conclusion of every football season, individual players are rightfully recognized not only for their talent, but also for their dedication and hard work to their teams.
Such is the case in 2015, as several Evangeline Parish football players were named to their respective all-district teams.
Starting with District 5-3A, both Ville Platte High and Pine Prairie had exciting seasons. The Bulldogs made another appearance in the playoffs, after a brief one year absence, losing a heartbreaker to Patterson High School in the first round.
Pine Prairie collected three wins on the year, tying a school record, and in the process giving their opponents fits throughout the season. Each team was rewarded, as they placed several individuals on the all-district team.
Ville Platte High put two players on the defensive team, as senior defensive lineman Vondarius Freeman and junior linebacker Tralon Thomas were tabbed for that list. Freeman was named as the district’s most valuable player on defense.
Offensively, Freeman was also named as a first team offensive player, while senior quarterback Terez Alfred was tabbed as the first team athlete.
The Bullodogs had three players named to the second team offensive unit. Senior running back Daylon Jones, sophomore wide receiver Kaybrien Ardoin and junior offensive lineman Breshonski Jones were named to that squad.
Garnering honorable mentions were Jordan Leday, Jaishaun Doucet, Rondrekus Ben, Martin Jason and Davon Vallier.
Pine Prairie was fortunate enough to have one first team player on the defensive side of the ball. Senior cornerback Dylan Doucet was tabbed as a defensive back for the season.
The Panthers also had four players named to the second team. Offensively, senior running back Douglas Fontenot and sophomore offensive lineman Colby Leggett were named to the team. Senior defensive end Josh Fontenot and junior defensive lineman Clint Graser were placed on the defensive squad.
In District 4-2A, the Mamou Demons had three players named to the second team. Sophomore wide receiver Lil Paul Williams was named to the offensive unit, while junior linebacker Joab Perron and sophomore defensive back Jaylen Griffin were placed on the defensive unit.
Honorable mention players from Mamou included Darius Tezeno, Ahmad Guillian, Kade Chatelain, Kendrick Willams, Dakota Fruge and Shawn Malveau.
Sacred Heart faced one of the toughest districts in the state, as they competed in District 5-2A. With a number of injuries and a late start for first year head coach Josh Harper, the Trojans did not gain many wins, but competed hard in every contest.
The Trojans had a number of honorable mention players named to the all-district team. Garrick Fontenot, Seth Shipp, and Caleb Soileau were all offensive players mentioned, while JT Harper and Nick Perry were mentioned on the defensive side of the ball.
It was a banner year for the Basile Bearcats, as they finished with an overall record of 10-2 and champions of District 5-1A.
In one of the greatest high school games ever, the Bearcats lost a gut-wrencher to Arcadia in the quarterfinals.
Because of their dominating district performance this season, several players were named as first teamers.
The Bearcats took home all of the top honors in the district, as senior running back Gabe Fontenot and senior linebacker Blaise Hebert were named as the offensive and defensive most valuable players respectively.
Also, head coach Kevin Bertand was named coach of the year.
Joining Fontenot on the first team offensive were senior offensive lineman Lane Joubert and senior tight end Ty Walker.
Defensively, Joubert, and senior defensive backs Jarrod Belle and Devin Bazinet were tabbed on the first team along with Hebert.
Hebert and Belle were also named as special teams players; Hebert for his punting and Belle for his return ability.
Basile also had four players named as second team selections. Senior center Rylie Nezat joined wide receiver Belle on the offensive side, while seniors Detrick Guillory and Tray David were placed on the defensive team.
Honorable Mention players for the Bearcats included Garrett Johnson and Jeremy Klumpp.
