Dempsey V. Murphy Jr.

Funeral services were held for Dempsey V. Murphy Jr., 81, of Mamou, at Zion Travelers Baptist Church in Mamou at 7 p.m., Sunday, December 27. Burial was held at 10 a.m., Monday, December 28, in the church cemetery.
Mr. Murphy died Saturday, December 19, 2015, at St. Landry Extended Care Hospital in Opelousas. He was born in Fernandina Beach, Florida, and was a retired member of the United States Army after 20 years of service. He also retired from the Government Department of Defense after 17 and a half years of service. He was honored for his service with a 21-gun salute at the grave site during the service.
Survivors include his loving and devoted wife of 44 years, Verlia Celestine Murphy of Mamou; three sons, Edward T. Murphy (Demetrius) of Mamou, Gerald Murphy (Julie) of Tomaco, Washington, and Sidney Murphy of Seattle, Washington; three daughters, Lanetta Murphy of Tampa, Florida, Sonya Accord (Glen) of Lake Stevens, Washington, and Dimple Murphy of LeCompte; one step-daughter, Sonja C. Wallace (Byron K. Sr.) of Houston, Texas; 15 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, relatives, friends and the Zion Travelers family.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Dempsey Murphy Sr. and Alfreda Clay; one sister, Mary Ella Parker; one granddaughter, Jasmine Murphy; and one great-grandson, Hazyah Ward.
