VILLE PLATTE -- The Sacred Heart Lady Trojans used a tenacious defense and an opportunistic offense to stay in the hunt for the district 5-2A title with their 42-30 win over the David Thibodaux Lady Bulldogs here Friday night.
With the win, Sacred Heart moves to 12-7 on the season and, most importantly, 3-1 in district play.
“We played really good defense tonight,” said Lady Trojan head coach Stephanie Fontenot. “We just need to stop fouling so much in the final quarter and become a little more patient on offense. The positive part is that we are getting a lot of playing time from our bench. That is going to help us later on down the line.”
Scoring was not at a premium to start the game, as Sacred Heart only held a 7-2 lead at the end of the first quarter.
In the second quarter, the full court press employed by the Lady Trojans began to take its toll on the Lady Bulldogs.
Sacred Heart capitalized on some fast break opportunities off of turnovers and went on a eight point run to start the second quarter.
That run jump started the Sacred Heart offense and allowed the Lady Trojans to take a 23-11 lead into the locker room.
Sacred Heart extended that lead in the third quarter, outscoring David Thibodaux 10-7. Senior center Gabbie Andrepont picked up six of her game high 15 points in the quarter.
The Lady Bulldogs managed to gain a 12-7 advantage in the final quarter, mostly on free throw attempts. However it was not enough to overtake the Lady Trojans.
Sacred Heart will travel to Grand Coteau Monday for a district match-up with Sacred Heart Academy.
