MAMOU – An all too familiar opponent was the opponent here Tuesday, as the Mamou Lady Demons hosted the Kinder Lady Yellow Jackets in a District 4-2A battle.
The Lady Demons held a 3-2 lead after three innings of play, but could not hold on to that lead, as the Lady Jackets snuck past Mamou in the top of the seventh for a 7-3 win.
With the loss, Mamou falls to 5-10 on the season and 4-2 in district play.
The Lady Demons were scheduled to play Kinder again on Wednesday in a make-up game and host Welsh today in another important district game.
Despite the loss, Mamou head coach Kim Manuel was still up beat about her team’s performance on the diamond against Kinder.
“Kinder is a district rival, and they are a good team,” said Manuel. “I think we played a good game all the way through. We are improving as we go. Our young kids are finally getting comfortable and we are starting to gel together. I think we played a solid game on defense, we just gave up those runs at the end of the game.”
Mamou got on the board first in the bottom of the first inning. Angel Menier walked to start things off. Lauren Soileau then singled.
Maggie Soileau popped up to the first baseman for the first out. The next batter for Mamou, Kourtnie Deshotel, was able to move Menier and Soileau over as she chopped a grounder to the pitcher who only had a play at first base.
With two outs, Maddie Fontenot doubled, driving in Menier and Soileau to give the Lady Demons the two- run lead.
Kinder was able to tie the game in the top of the third, when Shelby LaBuff and Emma Bertrand scored on a single from Baile Treme.
Mamou regained the lead, 3-2, in the bottom of the third when Deshotel scored on a two out single from Madison Fritz.
Kinder tied the game again in the top of the fifth, scoring a lone run as Kate Trahan crossed the plate on a single from Treme.
But it was the top of the seventh that spelled doom for the Lady Demons, as Kinder plated four runs to secure the win.
In the inning, the Lady Jackets got a two-run home run off of the bat of Bertrand and solo home run from Treme.
Mamou was lead at the plate by Fontenot, who was two-for-three with two doubles.
