MAMOU – The Mamou High Demons improved to 3-0 in District 4-2A play with an ever important 2-0 win over two-time defending state champion Kinder here Tuesday evening.
Mamou picked up a dominating performance on the hill from senior right-hander Dylan Duplechain to secure the win.
Duplechain pitched a complete game shutout, only allowing two hits, while striking out 10 Yellow Jacket batters.
“We knew that they were going to throw their number one at us,” said Mamou head coach Dale Serie. “So we threw our number one guy. I knew it was going to be a pitcher’s duel and that is pretty much what it turned out to be. Dylan does what Dylan always does. He went out and competed. He knows how to win.”
“He (Dylan) pitched a tremendous game,” stated Kinder head coach Kenny Fontenot. “Hats off to him, he was on his game today.”
After the first inning of play, their was a since that things were going to fall the way of the Demons.
Duplechain got the first three Kinder batters to fly out and retire the side.
Mamou came to bat in the bottom of the first and was able to take advantage of some initial jitters from Kinder starting pitcher Welles Cooley, a McNeese State signee.
Cooley gave up a single to Duplechain to lead off the bottom half of the inning. After Ronnie McBride struck out, the next two Demon batters, Jude Fontenot and Chet Guillory reached base after being hit by pitch.
With bases loaded and only one out, Austin Fontenot roped a hard single to left center field that scored Duplechain and Jude Fontenot. Guillory was thrown out trying to reach third from first base by the Yellow Jacket left fielder. Tucker Rougeau struck out to end the inning.
Never the less, the Demons held a 2-0 lead and one they would not relinquish the rest of the game.
Duplechain continued to show a masterful command of his pitches the next two Kinder at bats, as he struck out four of the six Yellow Jacket batters in the top of the second and third innings combined.
Kinder threatened in the top of the fourth, when Duplechain allowed his two hits of the game to the Yellow Jackets with two outs. Cooley singled and stole second base. He advanced to third on a single from Stag Creduer, putting runners at first and third.
But, Duplechain enticed a ground ball out from Jordan Cordova to Demon second baseman Rougeau, who made a routine throw to first base for the final out of the inning.
From that point on it was all Duplechain as he struck out four of the last 12 Kinder batters, including all three in the top of the seventh inning.
Leading the way at the plate for the Demons was Austin Fontenot who was two-for-three with two runs batted in.
With the win Mamou improves to 10-8 on the season, and most importantly 3-0 in district play.
The Demons are scheduled to play Welsh at home today in another district showdown.
