Panthers get huge district win; Lady Panthers clinch share

The Pine Prairie Lady Panthers clinched a share of the District 5-3A title on Friday with a win over the Port Barre Lady Devils. Pine Prairie are co-champions along with Church Point after each team defeated each other during the district season.
Also, the Pine Prairie Panther baseball team scored a huge district win over Church Point on Monday. The win evens the Panther’s district record at 2-2.
Here is a rundown of those games and other news around the parish sporting world.
Lady Panthers vs. Lady Devils
Pine Prairie did not let the fact that a share of the district title was on the line affect their play this past Friday, as they scored a convincing 6-0 win over Port Barre.
Lady Panther starting pitcher Karli Ortego gave a masterful performance on the mound, only giving up one hit and striking out nine, taking the win on the hill.
Pine Prairie jumped out to a 4-0 lead after one inning of play, when Jacie McFarlain, Sara Tate and Tori Bordelon all doubled in the bottom of the first inning.
The Lady Panthers added single runs in the third and fifth innings to close out the scoring.
Pine Prairie vs. Church Point
Even though it is still early in the district season, the Pine Prairie Panthers were in somewhat of a much win situation when they faced off against Church Point on Monday afternoon.
With some quality pitching from Zac Lee and timely hitting, the Panthers were able to slip past the Bears 4-3.
Pine Prairie scored single runs in the first, third, fifth and sixth innings and held off a late charge from Church Point to secure the win.
Gavin Ortego led the Panthers at the plate, going three for three with two doubles.
Thomas named to all-state team
Mamou High’s Arkeiyanah Thomas was recently honored by being named to the LSWA Class 2A All-State basketball team as an honorable mention selection.
The senior guard helped lead the Lady Demons to the District 4-2A title and a trip to the quarterfinals. Thomas was also the district and parish most valuable player for 2015-16.
Thomas averaged 18.2 points, seven assists and seven rebounds per game for Mamou in her final season.
Annual radio auction set
The 2016 radio auction to benefit Dixie Youth and the Ville Platte Girls Softball Association had been set for this Sunday, April 17.
As always all money raised at the auction will go to benefit both organizations to help offset costs associated with running those programs.
It will be held at the Northside Civic Center and will be carried live on KVPI beginning at 10 a.m.
