ALEXANDRIA — A streaky season for the Mamou Demon baseball team came to an abrupt end Tuesday afternoon, as they fell to the Menard Eagles 5-0 in the bi-district round of the 2016 playoffs.
With the loss the Demons finish the year with a respectable 15-12 over all record.
Despite the loss, Mamou head coach Dale Serie praised his team’s effort.
“We came out and did what I thought we needed to win the game,” said Serie. “I am very proud of the way we performed today. Hats off to Menard, they are a good ball club. I thought we were prepared to play them. They did the small things to win. We just could not capitalize when we needed.”
Serie also called out the seniors for the way that they handled themselves all season.
“We only started three seniors,” stated Serie. “They have been very vital in helping to lay the foundation of what we are trying to do as a program. They will be missed.”
The game was a pitching duel for most of the first five innings, with Mamou starting pitcher Dylan Duplechin and Menard starting pitcher Camerron Christian matching each other pitch for pitch.
After a scoreless first inning, the Eagles got two runs in the bottom of the second inning.
Jonathan Levasseur singled to lead things off for Menard. Bryce Bordelon doubled, putting runners at first and third.
A sacrifice fly from Scott Ponthie plated Levasseur. Gavin Curcio grounded to first, but was enough to plate Bordelon. Joe Vercher grounded to third for the final out, but Menared had the lead.
The game remained scoreless until the bottom of the sixth, when the Eagles put the finishing touches on the win, scoring three runs.
These runs came off of a relief pitcher for the Demons, as Duplechin was thrown out of the game without a warning from the home plate umpire that was very controversial. Up until that point Duplechin had only allowed the two runs on three hits.
