CARENCRO — Despite his high school not fielding a golf team, Colby Dupuis’ goal this year was to still make it to the state golf tournament.
Dupuis did just that by shooting an 81 at the LHSAA boys regional tournament on April 27, 2016 held at Links on the Bayou in Alexandria.
The Pine Prairie sophomore then turned his attention to the Division III state golf tournament held at Farm d’Allie in Carencro this past Wednesday and Thursday.
Dupuis, who plays at the Ville Platte Country Club regularly, shot back-to-back rounds of 89 for a two-day total of 178. That tied him for 37th place in the individual category with Catholic-New Iberia’s Saylor Tibbs.
University High’s Trey Winstead shot a two-round total of 140 to repeat as state champion.
“My goal was to get to the state this year but I didn’t perform the way I wanted to,” Dupuis said. “I was pretty confident but I never got the putter going.”
Low scores were hard to come by, as only one golfer (Winstead) finished with a total score under par.
Was Dupuis nervous playing in his first state championship?
“I wasn’t really nervous,” Dupuis said. “A lot of those guys are the same people that I played with in the district and regional tournaments.”
Dupuis firmly believes that this year’s tournament will be the foundation for better things to come the next two years of his high school career.
“This year’s tournament was just an experience year for me,” Dupuis said. “Now I know what to expect.”
