Brookshire buys closed WalMart store

MAMOU — The former WalMart Express store location in Mamou will soon be re-opening its doors but under a different name.
Brookshire Grocery Co. announced on Wednesday that the company is acquiring 25 former Walmart Express Stores, including the location in Mamou located at 1445 Old Hwy. 13.
The stores will reopen this summer under Brookshire’s new Spring Market brand. The deal is scheduled to close sometime in July.
In a release by Chairman and CEO Brad Brookshire stated, “Brookshire Grocery Company is already known throughout our market areas for having great stores and we are confident that our customers in these new markets will feel the same exact way.”
Brookshire added, “Our Spring Market stores will stand for friendly service, quality products, affordable convenience and a pleasant shopping environments. We are also really excited to hire hundreds of employees from these communities to help us take care of our new customers. We look forward to making a positive difference in each of these communities through our people, products, stores and service.”
Mamou will be one of five new locations in Louisiana with the others in Colfax, Iowa, Lake Arthur and Zwolle. Brookshire Grocery Co. currently operates 152 stores throughout Texas, Louisiana and Arkansas.
The Mamou store, which opened in January of 2015, was one of 102 WalMart Express locations, the smallest format stores in the company, that the retail giant closed in January.
