It has never happened in Ville Platte Girl’s Softball Association history.
But, for the first time ever the six and under all-stars have advanced to the PONY World Series beginning Wednesday July 13. The tournament will take place in Youngsville.
The all-stars took care of gaining an invite with their stellar play this past weekend in Crowley at the PONY regional tournament. Ville Platte went 4-2 in that tournament and placed third.
According to head coach Sunny LaHaye, the all-stars played some really good softball.
“I thought overall the team played well,” said LaHaye. “It was an exciting experience for the girls to compete on that level. The team is very excited to be going to the World Series. They hear the older girls that have been there talk about all the things that go on there; like opening ceremonies.”
Ville Platte took to the field on Friday for two pool games. The all-stars made the most of those games by defeating North Vermilion 16-7 and Highlands, Texas 16-10.
In the first bracket game, Ville Platte continued their winning ways by defeating Highlands again, this time by a 16-13 score.
Game two in bracket play found Ville Platte in a tight contest with Iowa. The all-stars found a way to pull out a 15-14 win.
In game three of the bracket, Ville Platte faced off against a new face in Dayton, Texas. The all-stars fought hard but could not pull out a win, losing to the Lone Star state team 16-10.
In the final game of the tournament for Ville Platte, a familiar opponent in Moss Bluff stood across the field; a team that Ville Platte had beaten three times in the sectional tournament.
However, it was not to be this time, as Moss Bluff outlasted Ville Platte 16-15 in a very tight game.
LaHaye was pleased that the all-stars were able to see other teams in the tournament.
“Being able to play against the teams from Texas was good for us,” stated LaHaye. “There hitting allowed us to work on situations that we had not faced this season. It especially gave our outfielders a chance to work on throwing the ball to the proper bases. This will help us next week in preparing for the World Series.”
