It has been an incredible season up to this point for the VPGSA 10 and Under All-Stars.
This group of nine year-olds have not backed down to any challenges all season long, especially having to play teams that are on average one year older.
The all-stars have gone through every tournament untouched and have come away with some impressive hardware, including the PONY Sectional tournament championship.
So, when Ville Platte took to the field this past weekend in Crowley at the PONY Regional tournament, all expectations were that they would be in the mix come championship Sunday.
But, it was not to be for Ville Platte, as the ladies fell twice in the tournament for a third place finish.
Despite the two losses, the all-stars played with drive and passion all weekend long; something they have done throughout the entire all-star season. And, with the high finish, Ville Platte will now advance on to the PONY World Series which will begin Wednesday July 13 in Youngsville.
“The team played tough the entire weekend,” said head coach Shane Darbonne. “We fought really hard throughout the tournament, but things just didn’t fall our way. After the tournament, you could tell the girls were disappointed. But, sometimes that is good, because it shows that they care about the game. They did not want to settle for third place.”
Ville Platte opened the tournament with two pool games and immediately went to work on offense.
In the first pool game, Ville Platte scored crooked numbers in every inning to roll past Moss Bluff 14-0. Game two in pool play was much the same, with Ville Platte pasting Opelousas by the score of 15-0
With the first game of bracket play, the Ville Platte bats did not have a chance to cool off. The all-stars plated all of their runs in just two innings in a 28-0 romp of Crosby, Texas.
A meeting with North Vermilion was on tap for game two of bracket play. Ville Platte continued the offensive explosion in a 13-0 win.
The winner’s bracket final found Ville Platte facing off against a well known opponent in Rayne. Just last weekend, Ville Platte downed Rayne for the sectional tournament title. However, this game would go a different way, as Rayne held on for a 2-1 win over the all-stars.
The loss threw Ville Platte into the loser’s bracket semi-finals and a date with cross-parish rival Mamou.
Mamou, looking to gain some respect and a shot at the trophy, held the potent Ville Platte offense in check throughout the game and came away with a 5-3 win.
Mamou got on the board first, plating a single run in the second inning. Ville Platte answered in the top of the second with a solo run of their own. But, Mamou regained the lead, driving in two more runs in the bottom of the inning.
Ville Platte tied it up in the fifth, but Mamou put the game away in the bottom of the inning by plating their final two runs of the game.
