Unelashed dogs discussed at Turkey Creek meeting

Dogs roaming the streets of Turkey Creek have become a problem that the council addressed at their monthly meeting Tuesday night.
The village’s mayor Heather Cloud informed the board that complaints have been made to her concerning dogs not being on a leash, and she asked the council if they would like to create an ordinance that would require dog owners to have their animals on a leash at all times.
The mayor also discussed what could be done with the stray dogs that the village is having to pick up.
Cloud said, “We are picking up three to four stray dogs a month, and after speaking with a local animal shelter they said that they would be willing to take these dogs and put them up for adoption for us. After so many days if a dog has not been adopted then the animal shelter would have to take other measures which could consist of the dog being euthanized.”
If this is done, the village would set how many days the dog would be up for adoption because it would cost the village six dollars a day for the dog to stay with the animal shelter.
When the council discussed this matter, Council member Neal King asked for more time to further look into the leash law of other municipalities.
King said, “I ask that we table this for now, so that we can have more time to further look at what other towns are doing.”
During the meeting, the council also discussed the possibility of creating an ordinance that addressed golf carts being driven on the road.
The village’s attorney Greg Vidrine informed the board that there is a state law in place that says that a golf cart cannot be driven on any public road.
If an ordinance was created to allow golf carts on the road the driver would be required to be a licensed driver. The owners of the golf cart would also have to make sure that their golf cart is equipped with mirrors and lights, and make sure that it has insurance and is registered with the Department of Motor Vehicles.
The council however asked to table this discussion as well until the full council was in attendance.
Other items discussed and approved at the meeting were:
Appointment of John S. Dowling as CPA for the 2016-2017 fiscal year for $820 a month.
