The Rockets, an AAU tenth grade basketball team from Ville Platte has collected their fourth National Title in the last three years, as they took home the Las Vegas West Coast National Tournament that took place on July 13-18.
The Las Vegas tournament is a huge event that encompasses over 500 boys and girls teams from around the country. The Rockets went undefeated in eight games and beat their opponents by over 10 points per game in route to their title. In fact, this is the second time that this group has won the Las Vegas tournament, having come home with the trophy in 2014.
These group of young men, consisting of seven players from Ville Platte, one player from Opelousas and one player from Oakdale have also won two other national titles in 2014 and one in 2016.
According to head coach Lee Clark, the team had to battle a tough team from Chicago in the finals to take home the hardware.
“The team that we defeated in the finals was one of the best teams in the country,” said Clark. “But, our guys played their heart out and came out on top. I can truly say that our players compete every time they go out on the floor. I am very proud of what they have been able to accomplish in these last three years. And on top of that they are first class young men.”
The team will next travel back to Houston to compete in that tournament beginning on Friday. The tournament will last until Sunday.
Clark and the team are very grateful to the people that have helped them along the way.
“I want to thank the community for their support of us,” stated Clark. “Without their help none of this would be possible. They have helped us so much financially.”
