On Friday, September 16, 2016, the Mamou Police Department responded to a call concerning an elderly man who had been robbed and beaten.
According to the MPD, “witnesses identified a 15-year-old male juvenile that was seen running from the scene of the robbery that occurred on Chestnut Street.”
Soon after officers arrived on the scene, investigators were able to locate the suspect who admitted to committing the crime.
The MPD also said that “the 15-year-old admitted to having a 10-year-old accomplice.”
The 15-year-old confessed to police that he and the 10-year-old had gone to the residence of an 84-year-old and “proceeded to tell him that they had seen someone breaking into his shed.”
According to the MPD, after receiving this information the elderly man prepared to drive to his shed to check on things, but before he got into his truck the “15-year-old grabbed the elderly man’s cane and began to beat him.”
The 15-year-old then said, “Give me your money, or I will kill you.”
The juveniles were able to take the victim’s wallet, which had $120 inside. This money has yet to be recovered.
Since the incident, which occurred around 7:30 p.m., both juveniles have been released back to the custody of their parents, and the case has been sent to the Evangeline Parish District Attorney’s Office.
The victim’s injuries forced him to have to have staples to close a deep cut on his arm that he received from the beating.
At this time though, the MPD said that “the victim is doing better.”
