This week, we take a look back at Oct. 1984.
• Incumbent Cal Vidrine and former Police Chief Harry Vidrine were in a runoff for Ward 1 city marshal.
• Members of Sacred Heart High School’s homecoming court were Jessica Reilly, Adriene Mayeaux, Louisa Lafleur, Angie Buller, Laura Veillon, Mark Fontenot, Queen Jill Leblanc and First Maid Liz Buller.
• Athletes of the Week were Eddie Washington, offensive guard at Ville Platte High School, and Donald Soileau, offensive guard at Sacred Heart High School.
• Linda Faye Robertson led the week’s Gazette football contest. Robertson’s only miss was picking Boston College over West Virginia.
• The Lady Tigers of Chataignier remained unbeaten in the 1984 season as they beat the Vidrine Lady Tigers 36-34. Angela Fontenot led the way for District 12-C Chataignier with 13 points while Melissa Bellard added 10 points for the victors.
• Derrall Moton led a trio of Vidrine players in double figures as the Tigers squeaked past the Chataignier Tigers 53-49 in non-district action.
• Chester Fontenot caught a 25 pound spotted catfish at Sam Rayburn Reservoir in Texas.
• The Flat Town Bowbenders held their last broadhead tournament. First place archers were: Robbie Dardeau, Bare Bow; Dirk Fontenot, Youth Bare Bow; Laura Prejean, Bare Bow; Shawn Vidrine, Youth Barehunter; Ricky “Rab” Fontenot, Bowhunter; June Powell, Bowhunter Free Style Limited; Keith Soileau, Bowhunter Free Style Limited, Ruse Allen Smith, Guest Division; L.P. Landry, Bare Bow with a perfect score; L.P. Landry II, Youth Bowhunter Free Style Limited; Mark Tremie, Young Adult Bowhunter; and Rita Fontenot, Bowhunter.
• The V.F.W. Vidrine-Aucoin Post 3803 and Ladies Auxillary presented Patriotic Award certificates to community citizens for displaying the American Flag at their homes each day. V.F.W. representatives Amanda and Pat Thibodeaux and Auxillary President Hilda Guillory presented certificates to Charlie and Lessie Guillory, Leo and Bell Brignac and Richard and Beulah Lee.
• Karen Ortego was promoted to branch manager of Pelican Homestead and Savings Association’s Mamou Office.
• Cameron Iron Works, a $50 million facilty located in the Ward 1 Industrial Park, marked its first year with a reception celebration. Plant manager Frank Bushman said the Cameron market was up and plans were to hire 25 to 30 new employees in November, the majority of the positions being machinists.
