It has been a rough non-district season for the Basile Bearcats, as they have finished the first five games with a 1-4 overall record. But, as they say the season begins anew when district competition begins and the Bearcats are hoping to put the first five games in the past and start fresh.
Basile will attempt to repeat as District 5-1A champions this Friday night when they host the North Central Hurricanes for homecoming tomorrow night. Game time is set for 7 p.m.
North Central comes into the game with a woeful 0-5 record. The Hurricanes have only scored 30 points in five games on offense and give up an average of 45 points per game on defense.
Still, Basile head coach Kevin Bertrand is not going into this first district game taking North Central lightly.
“We still have to show up and play,” said Bertrand. “No team is going to just roll over and give you the game. North Central is a gritty ball club and they will come in here trying to get their first win on the season.
If the Bearcats expect to pick up their second win of the year, they first must find some offense. Basile averages only nine points a game and has scored only one touchdown in three of their five contests. Last week against Port Barre, the Bearcats only managed 204 yards of offense against Port Barre; most of that coming in the final quarter.
“No doubt our offense has to pick up the pace, especially running the ball,” stated Bertrand. “We have to somehow find our running game of the past if we expect to be successful.”
