VILLE PLATTE -- There still may be a lot of basketball left to play in the 2016-17 season, but sometimes an early season district match-up can wind up determining who comes out on top when the last buzzer of the final league game sounds.
Such was the case here Friday night as the Ville Platte High Bulldogs and Lady Bulldogs took on the Northwest Raiders and Lady Raiders.
When the night was done, the Lady Bulldogs walked away with a 62-46 win to stay undefeated at 5-0 in District 5-3A.
Unfortunately, the Bulldogs fell by two points, 58-56, on a lay-up with ten seconds left to go, in one of the most thrilling games this season. Ville Platte is now 2-1 on the young district season.
In the initial contest of the night, the Lady Bulldogs jumped out to a quick 4-0 lead on two baskets from center Tyreonna Doucet.
The Lady Raiders fought back and took a 7-6 lead mid-way through the first quarter.
Ville Platte regained the lead on a three-point bucket from Miya McKinney and expanded that lead to 14-11 as the first quarter ended.
Ville Platte opened up a 20-13 lead at the start of the second quarter, as they went on a 6-2 run in the first 1:42.
Northwest crawled back into the game with two quick baskets. But the Lady Bulldogs answered by tallying the next 10 points of the game.
The Lady Raiders closed the gap by knocking down the final five points of the half to make the score 30-21.
Ville Platte came out of halftime ready to play, scoring 10 of the first 14 points to take a 40-25 lead.
Northwest, needing some energy, went to a full court press and was able to force turnovers that turned into points. Using that defensive effort, the Lady Raiders were able to cut the lead down to 45-39 as the third quarter closed.
The final period belonged to the Lady Bulldogs, as they turned up the heat and poured in 17 points to seal the win.
Doucet popped the nets for 17 points to lead Ville Platte in scoring.
The Lady Bulldogs move to 18-8 on the year with the win.
In the nightcap game, both Ville Platte and Northwest showed why they are two of the top teams in Class 3A.
From the tip-off to the final buzzer, the two squads were about as evenly matched as two teams could get.
The first quarter was a perfect example of that, as the Bulldogs and the Raiders traded punches like two heavyweight boxers. As the horn sounded on the initial period, Northwest held only a one-point advantage, 12-11.
The Raiders sank the two three-point baskets and hit on two free throws to begin the second quarter.
Nevertheless, Ville Platte would connect on the following two buckets to cut the Raider lead to 20-16 at the 4:19 mark.
Over the next four minutes plus, the teams threw body shot after body shot, until Ville Platte had secured a 34-33 lead going into the locker room.
The third quarter belonged to Northwest. After an initial basket by the Bulldogs to open, the Raiders proceeded to go on a 14-0 run, making the score 47-36 with 3:38 left in the period. That 11 point advantage would remain the rest of the quarter, as Northwest held a 52-41 lead at the end of the stanza.
Ville Platte would power their way back into the game, and actually take a 56-54 lead with only 2:24 left in the game by outscoring the Raiders 15-2.
Northwest would tie the game at 56-56 with 1:33 to go. The teams traded possessions down the stretch, with neither squad gaining an advantage until the Raiders hit the game winning shot with 10 seconds left on a put back lay-up.
Ville Platte was led by Martin Jason who scored 13 points.
With the loss the Bulldogs are now 16-6 on the season.
Both the Bulldogs and Lady Bulldogs will be on the road at Pine Prairie Tuesday night.
