At Wednesday night’s Evangeline Parish School Board meeting, the school district’s superintendent Darwan Lazard took time to remind the board about the upcoming election, where residents will vote on tax renewals.
Lazard said, “We will be voting to renew three taxes that you already pay, and these renewals are important because they are for everyone that works for the school district. If these do not pass, our school district will take a major hit, so I encourage you to get as many people as you can to the polls to vote.”
Early voting for the renewal of two parish wide maintenance tax and one renewal for the Basile district to maintain their schools began Saturday, April 15th, and will continue until April 22nd. Regular voting is set for April 29, 2017.
During the meeting Lazard also requested that the board approve stipend awards for personnel and students of the year.
Lazard said, “We would like to give a financial award to our outstanding support personnel, principals, teachers and students of the year to recognize them for their accomplishment.”
The board approved the stipend awards, which means district principals of the year will be awarded $200, teachers of the year will be given $150, outstanding support personnel of the year will receive $100, and students of the year will be awarded with their choice of $75 or a technology device.
The superintendent also wanted to remind everyone that the deadline for students to turn in transfer applications is May 15, 2017. He also stated that there will be no additional students going to Pine Prairie High School or Bayou Chicot Elementary due to the fact that neither school has space for students that do not live in the PPHS and BCE school district to attend.
Other items approved were:
• Adoption of a resolution to join the Interlocal Purchasing System.
• Payment of $391,896.73 to First Student for March 2017 Transportation.
• Child Nutrition Program to advertise for bid products for the 2017-2018 school year.
