As the residents in Evangeline Parish brace for the heavy rain that Tropical Storm Cindy could possibly bring to the area, mayors of each community and the Evangeline Parish Police Jury have prepared aid in the form of sandbags for those who need them.
For residents living within the City of Ville Platte, you may pick up sandbags at the city barn on Hickory Street beginning at 7:00 a.m.
To prepare for this storm residents can be certain Ville Platte Mayor Jennifer Vidrine has been working to hopefully reduce the flooding that may occur.
Vidrine said, “We have been making sure all of our drains are cleaned to help the drainage, especially in those places that flood first.”
The mayor also asks the public to obey any barricades, because she said it is against the law not to.
Vidrine said, “Officers will be giving tickets to anyone who does not obey a barricade.”
Vidrine would also like to remind citizens to “be sure to check on the elderly.”
For residents living in the Village of Pine Prairie in need of sandbags, you can call the Town Hall today and Friday at (337) 599-2904 during the hours of 8:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.
Residents of Turkey Creek may go to the Village Hall during the hours of 7:30 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. to pick up sandbags if they need.
Mamou residents can receive sandbags at City Barn located at the 100 block of Chestnut Street in Mamou until 4:00 p.m.
For residents who do not live within the city limits of a community, sandbags will be available at the police jury barn located near the 911 Office at Industrial Park.
Tropical Storm Cindy is predicted to unload as much as 12 inches of rain in areas stretching from Texas to Florida.
This storm is expected to make landfall along the coast by this morning, which is two days shy of 50th anniversary of when Hurricane Audrey ripped through Louisiana in 1957.
