It’s almost time for the start of a new semester at South Louisiana Community College’s Coreil Campus, and for those wanting to register for classes can do it now.
The Coreil Campus offers technical courses to students as well as the opportunity to earn an associates degree in certain areas.
Program that are offered at the campus located in Ville Platte are Medical Assistant, Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN), Business, General Studies, Welding, and Registered Nurse (RN).
If you ask the school’s Campus Director Carleen Jones, “there are eight great reasons why you should attend SLCC.”
One of those reasons is length of time.
Jones said, “Most of our programs get students prepared in two years or less. After a student completes their time at SLCC they are able to walk straight into the workforce or into a 4-year university to continue their college career.”
Two of the programs that allows you to continue your education at a four-year university are the business and RN programs.
For students interested in enrolling in the business program, they will be able to finish with their associates degree at SLCC.
According to Jones, the great thing about the business program is that SLCC has partnered with UL to allow students to easily further their business education.
Jones said, “We have a great partnership with UL and after working with them we can now offer our students the opportunity to transfer to UL without losing any of their courses. All of there classes will transfer over.”
Different program lengths that are offered are two years, 18 months or one year.
SLCC also offers a four to six month automotive program, as well as welding night classes to make furthering a person’s education easier.
The other seven reasons why Jones said students should consider attending SLCC are because of its “convenient location, smaller class sizes, program choices, higher earnings, job placement, affordability, and the academic knowledge and hands on experience you will receive.”
Another great thing happening at the community college is the removal of what use to be a required test for students to take upon the start at SLCC.
Jones said, “One of the great changes that have happened is that students no longer are required to take the accuplacer test. Medical and welding students use to be required to take this placement test before starting at SLCC. They also do not have to take remedial courses.”
Jones did say however, that “medical assistant students do have to pay for a background check.”
According to Jones though, SLCC does “have monies to help those students pay for their background checks.”
SLCC also offers scholarships, financial aid, and work study to all students who qualify.
Offering all of this to the community is something Jones said would not be possible without the support of the businesses in the community.
Jones said, “Local businesses have helped us by allowing our students to get real work experience locally, and it is that kind of community involvement that it takes to make SLCC and our students successful.
“We need the community to continue to support their school by spreading the word about the changes that have been made the opportunities we are fortunate enough to offer
