The Rev. Joseph J. Alexander was installed as new pastor of St. Anthony’s. He has been administrator since last May. He succeeds Father Michael DesJardins.

Sarah Soileau, 10, daughter of Jeanne and Randy Soileau of Eunice, won sportswear competition in the Deb Little Miss Lafayette Pageant. She is a fifth-grader at Central Middle School.

Members of the Eunice High Mock Trial team, parish champions, defeated Baton Rouge High at the state championships in Alexandria. They are Andrew Allen, Jude Latiolais, Sunny Vidrine, Michelle Mentel, Sherby Guillory, Lakesha Victoria and Maria Olivier.

Eunice Fire Chief Gerald LeJeune has been elected to a third term as president of the Acadia Parish Fire Protection Association. He hopes to see formation of a hazardous materials team in the area this year.

Damian Gomez was the lone boys singles winner in a St. Edmund match against Opelousas Catholic. Eunice boys Brandon Sattler, Brady Sattler, Brian Richard and Aaron Gothreaux claimed singles wins against Welsh.

All-state hurler Lisa Savoy pitched the Eunice Lady Bobcats to a 12-2 win over Opelousas. Tina Ardoin delivered a two-run double for the victors.

Dr. Don Hines took the oath as the new state senator from Dist. 28. The Bunkie physician served six years on the Wildlife and Fisheries Commission and was elected earlier this year.

The City Council approved a $250 monthly auto stipend for Mayor Curtis Joubert. In other action, the panel appointed John R. Young and Tom Dischler to the Economic Development Council.

The St. Edmund Booster Club broke ground for a new football field and hopes to have it ready for play this fall. The field is adjacent to the Northwest Community Center. Booster Brian Tanner and Coach Howard McCarty said all games will be played at the field. The Blue Jays have previously used the Eunice High field.

Lindsay Hoychick, 14, daughter of Terry and Susan Hoychick, has been named the St. Landry Parish student of the year and will compete at the regional level.

An open house was held for Craig Ortego, new administrator at Moosa Memorial Hospital.

Glendale Elementary was named by Redbook magazine as one of America’s top elementary schools. “Ching” Veillon is principal.

St. Edmund’s Tonya Zaunbrecher and Eunice’s Danielle Guillory were named the outstanding players on their respective all-district basketball teams.

The new phase of the Liberty Center and Prairie Cajun Culture Center is under construction. Clause Construction is the contractor.

The Eunice Lions Club named Genny Dischler its Humanitarian of the Year. She is on the board of Moosa Memorial and active in civic and church affairs.

City Councilman Michael Dupre has been elected chairman of the St. Landry Parish Democratic Executive Committee.

Eunice High officials announced a change in the traditional homecoming schedule. This fall, the parade will be switched to Thursday and will end at the school instead of at the Fairgrounds. The traditional bonfire will begin immediately after the parade.
