Myra Miller column
As an active tennis league player for over 25 years I enjoy the competitive and fun sport. Tennis players have six courts provided by the city of Eunice at the Fair Grounds for our pleasure. Granted they are in poor shape, but that will be corrected soon.
Both high school tennis teams, Eunice High and St. Edmund, use the Buddy Fay memorial courts to practice and play their tournaments.
All in all, I support and encourage league tennis (men and ladies) and high school tennis, but I’ve reached the point that I need to get on my soap box.
Litter, litter, and more litter, why do we have so much litter on the tennis courts?
Much of this trash can be avoided and corrected by simply picking up tennis balls, empty tennis cans, water bottles, etc. It’s really not a hard thing to do - pick it up and throw it away in the cans provided outside the courts.
What is so hard about adults and teenagers picking up their junk and putting it in the cans?
Be considerate of the next group of tennis players that will play after you on the courts.
With March gusty winds prevailing, litter left behind on the courts is tossed around and blown all over.
There are trash receptacles on site next to the courts, use them.
Let’s (all) do our part, league players and high school tennis players, pick up your trash (stuff) after you play tennis.
I would suggest that the last drill at practice for the high schoolers be to pick up after themselves.
Surely that lesson learned is just as important as learning one more way to hit a topspin lob.
I commend and applaud Pierre Martel and his group of Central Middle School students for their effort and time to pick up everybody’s litter in their annual Trashathon.
But by God, there would not be that much trash if ALL of us do our part to pick it up.
There are trash cans all over and most of us have those little plastic hanging trash do-ma-jiggies inside our car, put it there until you can get to a trash receptacle.
