The St. Edmund Blue Jays rallied in the bottom of the sixth inning to score a 3-2 victory over the Yellow Jackets of Kinder.

Tyler McGee opened scoring with a solo home run over the left field fence in the bottom of the first inning.

Kinder came back to steal the lead in the top of the fifth, with Kinder second baseman Rusty Bell singling to score one run and Kirby Buck doubling to score another.

But St. Eds rallied in the bottom of the sixth, when Jarod Fontenot and Jeff Fontenot took advantage of a couple of wild pitches to score, giving St. Eds a 3-2 lead.

Despite base hits by Justin Nevills and Blake Courville, the St. Eds’ defense was able to shut the door on the inning before Kinder could score.

Wesley Richard pitched the win, giving up two runs, one of which was earned, and seven hits in seven innings. Richard walked one batter and struck out eight.

On Monday, the Jays begin District 6-1A play, travelling to Pointe Coupee to face the Catholic High Hornets at 3:30 p.m.

Coach Tré Brown said the Jays are ready for district play. “We’re doing well; we’re just getting back everyone who’s going to be in the starting lineup, except for Mac Manuel; he pulled his hamstring for the third time against Parkview,” Brown said.

“But we’ve got the rest of the lineup to take us through the season, and it’ll really help us out, I think.”

St. Edmund’s Blue Jays are ranked second in the state for Class 1A in the Louisiana Baseball Coaches Association polls released last week.
