Students get into Lunch Week

MORSE – As Acadia Parish schools celebrate Breakfast/Lunch week, Morse Elementary students were eager to participate in all slated activities.
Many activities throughout the week were initiated for the week by staff member, Ms. Casey Vercher. Monday’s activities focused on “The Spirit of the Louisiana Two step”, during which students were encouraged to do research to answer the question “What does beef provide?” Answers were turned in on Wednesday to be entered into a prize drawing.
Students also learned about the state’s motivational public health program concerning eating healthy and exercising, which is found on the website named louisiana2step.com.
“The Spirit of the French Language”, was the adopted theme for Tuesday’s activities. Students were presented information on Louisiana Rice, and proven facts, such as children that eat carbohydrate foods with a low glycemic index adds a boost in controlling behavior and positively effects his/her performance. They also were informed on the “Origin of Gumbo”.
Wednesday, the adopted theme was “The Spirit of New Orleans” and that afternoon during lunchtime, special guests Me’lange, a local Cajun music band, entertained provided much enjoyed entertainment for the students. Later that afternoon, students enjoyed a Battle of the Bands. Upon entering the cafeteria, pictures from a recent nutrition coloring contest were displayed, and it was plain to see that much enthusiasm was behind the activities. Ms.Vercher seemed very pleased with the students’ participation. “After last week’s LEAP testing, and this being the last week of school before spring break, it was time for something different,” Vercher continued.
“The Spirit of Cuisine” was the theme slated for Thursday’s activities, and Louisiana strawberries were the main feature. The American Cancer Society released information that said that foods rich in Vitamin C may lower the risk of cancers of the gastrointestinal tract, and that strawberries, in fact, contain more Vitamin C than citrus fruits.
It is always such a great thing to see young children in our schools, our future, participating in life-altering activities such as this. Nutrition is such an important subject that for the most part, in Louisiana, is unspoken of.
